Week 3: How free is free

In Philosophy we were talking about free will and the extents to how free we really are. One situation that was brought up was we are able to make our own decisions, but if we make the wrong one we get a punishment or discipline. If we are free then shouldn't we be able to make either decision with out getting in trouble for it. In class we are told to raise our hand in order to speak or if we have a question, but with free will shouldn't we be able to speak when ever we want. By law we have to go to school until your are 16, again if we were free then we should be able to choose whether we go to school or not at any age.
With our free will also comes rules and laws that you are forced to obey. Whether you are playing a sport, going to school, driving somewhere, or just making renovations to your house you have to obey the rules and follow the laws set in place for every action you do. In sports there are rules you have to follow otherwise you and your team suffer a penalty. In class you have rules you have to follow in the class rooms and even just walking around the campus. While driving you have to wear a seat belt, drive on a certain side of the road, and follow the speed limits. To change a look to your house, you must get a permit to do so otherwise the city will be giving you tickets like crazy.
Laws are put in place to protect us and to protect others. However, we can not say we are free because we have limits and laws we must follow every single day. So when you wake up in the morning and head to school look around at all the laws you have to follow and ask yourself, how free are we.

  1. Great philosphy! Interesting point of view! I never noticed how limited and restricted we really are. We have alot of rules, alot of regulations to keep us in order, and to avoid chaos. I guess it all depends on how you feel as a person, and how you cope with the rules given you. I try not to pay attention to them. You can only be as free as far as your spirit can stretch pass the restrictions given to you by man.

  2. That was definitely a very interesting paper! I have thought about this before because you are exactly right! We are not as free as they say we are. Every where we go, everything we do, there are laws and restrictions that we have to go by. Like you said if we don't there are most definitely consequences.

  3. I definitely understand where you are coming from and your point of view. I am going to have to side toward the rules and laws, because we do have freedom to a certain extent. If we didn't have the rules look where children would be today, no one likes school. Do you really think that they would go if they did not have to? Also in the car, without rules look how many car accidents already happen with them. Without rules people would be dying like bugs. Your point is valid, but without the rules and regulations I don't know what are world would look like today.

  4. What an interesting topic. I'm jealous of your Philosophy class! I love the study of philosophy. You'll glean some really sweet paper ideas from your readings...who is your instructor?
